Chamber Member S&D Plumbing Honored at Texas Workforce Conference
Taylor Chamber member S&D Plumbing (S&D) received the Employer Award of Excellence for Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area at the Texas Workforce Commission’s 18th annual conference. The award honors employers that are actively involved with their local workforce board and have made a positive impact on employers, workers and the community.
Sam Dowdy, owner of S&D, identified a local need for skilled technicians and helped create a unique partnership between five Central Texas school districts, a local business, and Texas State Technical College (TSTC) to develop what would become the TSTC Tech-Connect Co-op. Beginning with the 2014–2015 school year, Central Texas high school students will have the opportunity to participate in a cooperative training program with no tuition costs, earning up to 27 college credits.
Participants will also have the opportunity to work for S&D and other participating plumbing companies to earn wages while enhancing their skills and advancing their career goals. Hours worked both in the classroom and on the job will be applied toward each student’s Tradesmen’s Plumber license through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
“The hard-working families of Texas benefit greatly when employers, the workforce system, and local partners come together to strengthen their communities,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “I congratulate S&D Plumbing and Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area for their leadership and commitment to preparing today’s workforce for tomorrow’s Texas.”
S&D Plumbing also took home the coveted Economic Development Corporation's 2014 “Economic Engine Award” at the Taylor EDC business awards banquet for its efforts with this program and other local initiatives. S&D is a family owned and managed business located in the heart of downtown Taylor. They have been a loyal Chamber member for many years and are an active force in the community. The Chamber is proud to call them one of our own!
